Comforters and Bedding: Common Questions and Care

There’s nothing quite like coming home at the end of a long day, getting out of your work clothes, and dropping blissfully down into your bed. It’s soothing, liberating, and calming.

Your bedspread takes care of you by keeping you comfortable and creating a sense of harmony in your interior design. Take care of your bedspread by arming yourself with the following facts for bedspread care!

Caring for Your Oversized Queen Bedspreads (or any Bedspreads)

Unlike your sheets and pillowcases, you don’t need to wash an oversized queen bedspread quite as frequently. A good general rule of thumb is about once per month - unless you have a reason to clean them more frequently.

Some blankets, quilts, and bedspreads can be fairly delicate or contain delicate lace trim or accents. For these, you’ll need to follow special instructions for care, but for many bedspreads, you can simply machine wash them.

Many of the bedspreads we carry are machine washable. For instance, our soft microfiber bedspreads can be washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent - avoid the use of harsh detergents or other liquid cleaners. Less is more, and the gentle cycle will help protect the bedspread from damage.

As for drying them, many of them are safe to tumble dry low, although we also recommend line drying. Line drying is slower but is also much gentler on the fabric.

From time to time, it’s also a good practice for you to shake your comforter out to keep the down from bunching up or getting compressed.

Caring for Your Sheets and Pillowcases

Best practices are to wash your sheets and pillowcases a bit more frequently than you wash your comforters or bedspreads, especially if you sleep in the bed every night. Let experience dictate what you should do, but a good general rule of thumb is to wash sheets and pillowcases every week.

Acceptable water temperature will vary depending on the material from which the sheets are made, but remember that hotter water temperatures can cause naturally materials like cotton to shrink. Generally speaking, it’s best to wash them in warm or cool water.

Again, mild detergents are generally better than harsher detergents, as mild detergents are less likely to damage the fibers of the sheets. Moreover, if you must use bleach, there are two things you need to confirm.

One is that the material is bleach safe, as not all materials can be bleached. If you do bleach, we suggest using non-chlorine bleach (color safe, too, if necessary) as non-chlorine bleach is less damaging to natural and synthetic fibers.

If your sheets are safe for machine drying (and most are) tumble dry them on low heat and cut the cycle slightly short to prevent wrinkles from forming.

Or, you can do things the old fashioned way and hang your sheets to dry on a line. This is much gentler on fabric, can help prevent the loss of fibers from the fabric, keeping them softer for longer, and will naturally prevent wrinkles. When hung properly, the weight of line-dried sheets will stretch out the sheet and wrinkles from forming.

Storing Bedspreads, Comforters, Sheets, and Pillowcases

When you’re keeping your bedding sets, including bedspreads, comforter sets, sheets and duvet covers in storage and not out on the bed, it’s best to keep them folded in a cool, dark, dry location away from light and traffic.

If you keep them in storage for a prolonged period of time, take them out and hang them outside for a few hours when the air is cool and dry. Make sure you hang them in an area that is not in direct sunlight to prevent the colors from fading. Doing so every few months will prevent odors from settting in.

Should a Comforter Touch the Floor?

The general rule of thumb is that a comforter should not touch the floor. It’s just about properly sized if it covers the mattress and reaches just beneath it.

Therefore, if the comforter covers the mattress and a little bit of the box spring, it should reach just about a third of the way down to the floor, as long as the bed is not propped up on bed risers.
