7 Top Trends in Interior Design You Need to Know About

We’re almost two months into 2022, and if you’re itching to catch up with a new look for your interior design for the new year, you can still make it happen - and it doesn’t mean you need to renovate your entire home!
While some of these modern interior design trends could involve extensive interior changes, others only require the exchange, removal, or introduction of a few elements.
Make any that appeal to you today - and table the others for a legitimate home renovation down the road!
1.Patchwork bedspreads are back!
Patchwork originated as a way of making use of old, worn bits of cloth and fabric, minimizing waste, and getting the last bit of value out of every scrap of material. This evolved into a rich staple of folk art, which gave rise to quilting.
It became so popular that patchwork was adopted by high-fashion and emulated by designers, and the look of patchwork was imitated on bedspreads, sheets, curtains, jackets, and more.
Patchwork bedspreads are back and growing in popularity in 2022. What’s great about patchwork is it's so versatile. It’s easy to create color harmony since so many patchwork bedspreads contain so many colors and so much movement!
Our quality printed patchwork bedspreads are made from durable brushed microfiber, lightweight enough to be comfortable throughout all seasons, are easy to care for, and are even reversible.
2.Wallpaper is coming back, too
Just like the attractive patchwork is making a comeback in patchwork quilts, bed covers, pillow shams, blanket throws, and whole bedding sets, wallpaper is making a comeback too.
Specifically, bright and bold wallpaper is making a comeback. Think wallpaper with abstract patterns, bright geometric shapes, floral patterns, and other elements that are not entirely different from patchwork. It’s sort of like mid-century modern, but with a truly modern twist.
3.Maximize it
Minimalism was a mainstay through the mid-century modern trend of the last century and continues to be popular. However, it’s met its match in maximalism.
Whereas minimalism attempts to break everything down to the bare minimum, embracing simplicity, straight lines, and negative space, maximalism employs every element imaginable to tell a story.
The devil is in the details with maximalism, and anything that represents the decorator’s personality can be used to create a “maximalized” interior space.
Portraits, wall art, decorative figurines, live plants, displays and curios, and other unique knick-knacks can be used to infuse an interior setting with personality. The idea is to tell the story of living in the space; who lives there, what has their life entailed, and why it is important.
It’s a refreshing break from the grays, blacks, whites, and bare-bones of minimalism and it’s really making a splash.
4.(Warm) Neutrals are natural
Specifically, warm dark neutrals. Dark cocoa, chocolate, and coffee tones are taking over, not only in paint, wall and floor wall tiles, stone, and decor but also in home furnishings.
This is likely due to the fact that many natural woods, like black walnut, ebony, tiger maple, mahogany, and teak are popular in furniture and decor. These woods sport rich, dark brown tones that, while still neutral, are much warmer than black or gray.
These tones are then reflected in the upholstery, flooring, countertops, and decor of an interior arrangement, and the effect is marvelous.
5.Dark kitchens are trending
Sterile, light neutrals have ruled kitchen and dining spaces for years. From the austere silvers of stainless steel appliances to the light grays of marble, granite, and even Formica countertops, kitchens have been dominated by listless light neutrals.
Some homeowners have had enough, and they’re welcoming warmth back into the kitchen. Some trends include the use of brown and tan marble, granite and other natural stones, wooden kitchen furniture instead of wrought iron or steel, and warmer paints
It doesn’t have to be brown, though. Dark reds and ombre are also popular in kitchens, for very good reason: they make the space feel warmer, cozier, and more inviting.
6.Bring the outdoors in!
People are spending more time indoors than ever, and some of them have responded by bringing the outdoors in. Indoor wicker furniture is growing in popularity, as are roughly hewn natural stones.
Another great way to “bring the outdoors in” is to make use of green - preferably living - accents. Houseplants can regulate indoor temperature, help filter the air of toxins, control ambient noise levels, and keep the humidity within the healthy range. Some even report boosts in productivity when in the vicinity of houseplants!
7.Embrace flexible interior spaces
Another popular design trend for 2022 is to embrace the flexibility of indoor spaces. Open-concept floorplans have been very popular for the last several decades, and although more traditional designs are starting to take over, there are plenty of open-concept houses still out there.
If your home has an open concept layout and you want to make it cozier or divide up the spaces, there’s no need to call a contractor and start throwing up walls! Simply invest in high-quality modern room dividers for home improvement and start sectioning things off. With the addition of a room divider that matches your interior decor, you can immediately make a space feel more intimate and more private, giving the illusion of multiple rooms in the same space!
